Scott McMann post match Saturday

Accies web reporter Martin McConnell spoke with Scott McMann after Saturday’s draw with Partick Thistle…

It wasn’t the result that everyone would have liked but how did you think the game went?

“I think that it would have been a decent match to watch from a fans point of view. For us, I thought that we should have gone on to win the match, especially after creating so much in the second half. I’m obviously a bit disappointed, but pleased that we went on to win the penalty shootout for that extra bonus point which could prove to be crucial.”

It was a poor couple of goals to give away from a Hamilton point of view. Is that something to be worked on?

“Yes, definitely. That’s something that we’ll need to cut out before the season gets underway. If we play like that in the Premiership and give away chances like that, then we’ll lose goals. So we’ll need to tighten up and take the positives from the game.”

The likes of yourself, Ross Cunningham and Lewis Smith put in a good attacking performance today. Is that something you’d like to take in to the start of the league season and work on?

“Yes but first and foremost I’m a defender and need to do a defensive job for the side, so that has to come first. If I can get forward to help out the side and create chances then that’s also part of my job as a sort of full back/wing back. Yes, we do create enough chances up front but we need to tighten up at the back and focus on that a bit more for now.”

Do you think the younger players that played so well today can have an impact for the side this season?

“Yes, I feel that they’re already having a positive impact. If you look at Lewis Smith and Ross Cunningham, they’ve both done great in the last couple of games. So yes, it’s been positive for them in their development and hopefully they can stay in the team and push the more experienced boys for a place.”

It’s all to play for now against Airdrie come Saturday?

“Yes, it’s a must win as we need to win that game to stand any sort of chance of qualification.”

Do these league cup games come a little bit too early? For all teams not just Hamilton.

“No, I don’t think so. I feel that we’ve been in training and preparing for long enough now. We feel fit enough to compete in these games so I don’t think that they’ve come too early. I just feel that we have to tidy up in some areas.”

Do you feel the benefit from these competitive matches come the start of the league season?

“Definitely. It’s much better than preseason friendlies. The gaffer is always hammering it into us that there’s no friendlies and we can’t take any match lightly. We treat everything like a Cup final and should be ready for the start of the new season.”
