Dougie Imrie on new role as Development Coach

Accies legend Dougie Imrie has set his sights on what he would like to achieve in his first year as a full time development coach.

Dougie, who officially ended his playing career during the close season, said: “I would love to get a shot at the UEFA Youth League with the boys, it was a fantastic effort from all the lads that year and it gave our side the chance to test themselves against the very best in Europe which is something as a full-time coach now I would love to see the boys do again.

Imrie added: “We have real quality in the youth squad to do it, obviously we lost guys like Reegan and Lewis Smith who moved on into the first team. However, given what I have seen since the boys came back there is definitely quality all over the pitch.

For Imrie the challenge of taking on a coaching role full time is one in which he has enjoyed. He said: “The transition has been smooth, I have been coaching for four years part time which has helped, I want to help the young Accies where I can and push them on to be ready for the step up into the first team. When I first came back to the club six years ago I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I eventually did retire but Geo (George Cairns) was a massive influence, when he discussed his vision for the academy with me I really bought into it and was convinced this was the best path for me.

Imrie and the development side will be facing Lowland League side BSC Glasgow in the first round of the Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup with the game to be played on the 7th of August.
