Oban Tournament Winners

For the fifth time in the past eight seasons we won the annual Oban Saints pre-season tournament, the D&K Lafferty Contractors Cup, on Saturday 13th July.

Played in the usual round robin format, playing five games each of 30 minutes duration, we went into the final tournament game against Dundee Utd in 3rd Place. United were top with ten points, St Anthony’s had finished on nine points and we were on seven, but with a better goal difference. Accordingly, any win gave the title to us on goal difference, while the Tannadice club just needed a draw. And a goal in the last minute saw us win 1-0 to take the title!

Dougie Imrie, George Cairns and Matt Boyle were in charge of the following squad –
Ross Connelly and Jamie Smith, Ciaran McAndrew, Leon McCann (c), Jamie Hamilton, George Stanger, Dylan Forrest, Andy Winter, Charlie Reilly, Kyle Munro, Reegan Mimnaugh, Marley Redfern, Daryl Meikle, Liam Harris, Sean Slaven, Jay Blair, Kode Adedoyin and two trialists

Game 1 – Accies 0-1 St Anthony’s
Game 2 – Accies 3-0 Oban Saints (Ciaran McAndrew (on his 18th birthday!), Ross Cunningham, Liam Harris)
Game 3 – Accies 4-1 South Lochaber Thistle (Reegan Mimnaugh 2 (1 pen), Jay Blair, Trialist #2)
Game 4 – Accies 0-0 Alloa Athletic
Game 5 – Accies 1-0 Dundee Utd (Trialist #1)

And it was skipper Leon McCann who went up to lift the trophy!

Our thanks as always go to Davy Buchanan and all at Oban Saints for their usual excellent organisation, including the hot weather, and the tournament sponsors D&K Lafferty Contractors.

Head of Youth Academy Director George Cairns commented, “At one stage it didn’t look like we could do it, but working hard and playing well in hot conditions brought us a win once more up here. It is always a great tournament to take part in, as the players get five half hour games, it’s short, sharp and hard work needed to succeed here.”

Club owner Ronnie MacDonald said, “I’ve been coming up to this tournament for about 25 years now, it is always well run and provides a good test, regardless of who we are playing or who we have in the squad. It’s hard work and I’m delighted to see our youthful squad win the tournament again.”
