Accies Captain Darian MacKinnon shared his thoughts after the defeat against Rangers with the mediaand Accies web reporter Martin McConnell….
You must be gutted after that result. It was never a 4-1 was it?
“No, It wasn’t. I thought that when we scored we’d probably go on and win it. Then we’ve given away a penalty, then after that we’ve chased it to get another one but given away another penalty. So, it’s definitely an unfair reflection of the match and the way that we’ve played, sometimes that happens in football.”
The way you played for the majority of that game would have got you a result against almost any team in the league.
“Yes, I would say so. But that’s a challenge for us as a group. We can’t play well one week then feel sorry for ourselves when the result doesn’t go our way. We need to take that level of commitment, stay fully on the ball and get some points on the board next time out.”
You started the match a bit tentatively before getting on top after about ten minutes. Did you notice anything in the way that they were set up that allowed that to happen?
“It’s just that when you’re playing against the bigger sides like Rangers and Celtic, you’re trying to work them out without going gung ho. We respect them for being a good side but we thought that with the way that we played, we could handle them. And I think with the way we played in the first half, you saw it, we were quality going forward. I think myself a couple of times, if I get the ball through we could have got the goal but listen we played really well but were just unfortunate on the day.”
With the bench mark set really low today for fouls and cautions. Do you think that the challenge on Mickel Miller in the first half when he was being pulled back, was a decent shout for a penalty?
“I do, but I’m not going to ref the match as I personally like him as a referee because he communicates well with the players. I think sometimes with the bigger crowds they can be easily influenced and the cards start to get flashed about. I even think the one with Morelos and me where I got booked, he’s cut me late so of course I’m going to react. Maybe I shouldn’t react but when the cards get flung around it can be a bit harsh.”
Did you feel that the two conceded penalty kicks were a bit soft?
“Yes, I think that they were. The position that the referee was in was exactly the same as I was in and he can’t see it. 100% he can’t see it, because I couldn’t see that it was a penalty so I don’t know how he could. Then I asked him and he said that it was him that gave it and not the assistant. It’s guessing. It looks like a penalty but I’m not sure if it is.”
Can you take all the positives from that performance in to next week’s game against Kilmarnock?
“Yes, as long as we show the same levels of commitment and desire as we did today. The quality on the ball as well. We created plenty of chances, it was just unfortunate that we were on the end of a bad scoreline.”
