McMann & MacKinnon Post match

Accies media reporter Martin McConnell caught up with Scott McMann and skipper Darian MacKinnon after Saturday’s defeat at home to St Johnstone

Darian MacKinnon

Well, you shot yourselves in the foot today according to the manager.

“Aye, it was two rubbish goals we’ve lost and if there’s one team you can’t do that against then that’s St. Johnstone as they make it very difficult to get back in to the game. It’s disappointing as it was a good one for us to take three points from and push on in the league.”

As you say, they’re one of the best at seeing a game out.

“They’ve got the experience plus this year I think they’ve got a wee bit better quality too. I think when we’re pushing on in the game, you could see a couple of their breakaways near the end. The boys out wide and Tony Watt, they’re a good side to be fair to them but I think it’s a game that we should be winning at home anyway. I think we played not bad in spells and they score against the run of play then a minute from half time which is absolutely criminal.”

I suppose the bonus for you is that most of the sides around you lost today as well.

“Aye, well we checked the scores when we came in just to see what was going on, but we don’t want to be getting in to that and wanting teams to do us a favour this early on. We want to sort our own business out and that’s one we should have maybe won today.”

The goal came from a good pacey move which you could maybe have done more of during the game?

“Yes, we’ve been working on that during training and to be fair I think the midfield were giving the strikers and the number ten a lot of early balls but I think that the quality on the day just wasn’t what it’s been recently. They’re trying to take people on and it’s breaking down and wee Boydy for example, is one of the best at finding his feet and making something happen. They’re firing balls in to him and it probably just wasn’t his day.”

You’ve also got these new signings about to come in and you’ve got two weeks to work with them. If you can get to know them and they get to know all of you, then they could integrate in to the side by the time you next play.

“Yes, I think the good thing about the signings is that it’s not unknown signings either. I think that the four players that we’ve just brought in are all known by us. We know what Keatsy’s going to give us, a wee bit of quality. The big number nine from Molde is going to be the big target man I think and he’s got some pace too. Big Matthew Kilgallon is hopefully another leader at the back who’ll win headers and the boy Scott Martin is from what I’ve heard, going to be another option in the middle of the park with a bit of energy who’ll get stuck in.”

How hard is it going to be for you guys this season to stop conceding so many goals?

“Well it is, because I think that our home record here was terrible last year. We don’t want teams coming here thinking that they’re going to have an easy game. I’d like to get back to the Hamilton side of old where I wouldn’t say teams feared coming here, but they knew when they came here they’d be in for a tough, tough game. I think we’d won quite a lot a couple of years previous to that and I think we’ve fallen away from that in the last couple of seasons and been pretty easy to beat at times.”

Scott McMann

One of the poorer performances from the side this season?

“Maybe. We gave ourselves far too much to do after conceding two sloppy goals in the first half. So, yes it was disappointing but we’ll go again next time out.”

You seemed very wasteful in possession today with far too many basic passes going astray.

“Yes, I think we just let our standards drop a wee bit. Again, it’s the defensive mistakes that has really cost us but we’ll just have to pick ourselves up and go again in a couple of weeks time at Livingston.”

That first goal especially, it could have been cleared to safety about half a dozen times but wasn’t.

“Yes, you’ve got to clear your lines. When you get the ball back from a set piece you’ve just got to clear it, but again, we’ll come back again next week and go over it to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Will the two weeks until the Livingston game give you time to do that?

“A couple of days off to rest and recover and then when we come back we know that we’ve got a couple of very important games and we’ll look forward to that.”

Have you met any of the new players that have recently signed?

“I’ve met a couple of them. A couple of them were in yesterday doing stuff, so they seemed like nice guys and I think they’ll be valuable additions to the team.”
