A new look Accies side featuring a total of five debutants got our Betfred Cup campaign off to a poor start, with another cup defeat at Galabank. Just two of the starting line up from that 4-1 Scottish Cup defeat started this time around, Darian MacKinnon and Ziggy Gordon, back marking his second ‘debut’.

After a slow start Accies gradually fought their way into the game and at times knocked the ball around well and looking comfortable in possession. Chances however, were few and far between for both sides. Rakish Bingham went closest in the first half, rounding off a decent move with a shot off the upright.

The complexion of the game changed completely on the hour, when Annan scored with their first accurate effort on the Hamilton goal. The home side didn’t rest on their laurels and continued to pose problems. Mickel Miller struck the cross bar with fifteen minutes to go, but in the end, all Accies efforts to find an equaliser proved fruitless.

Annan started the sharper of the two sides, managing to get inside the Hamilton penalty area on a couple of occasions. Chris Johnstone causing a moment of panic when he forced Gary Woods into a block when he failed to gather from a cross, before sending a strike over the open goal from 15 yards out.

Accies struck back with a chance inside a couple of minutes, when a ball forward was chested inside by Imrie to Bloomfield, then out wide to Rakish Bingham, who struck low from the edge of the 18-yard line and off of the post. Miller went close a couple of times with shots from range before Imrie forced a good save from the keeper with a shot from the corner of the six yard box.

Shortly after the break, a MacKinnon cross come shot to the back post was left by the Annan keeper to curl narrowly wide of his goal. Dougie Imrie then flighted in a beautifully weighted 25-yard free kick into the Annan box, Miller managed to get his head on to the end of it but didn’t manage to give the keeper much trouble.

On the hour, Annan won a corner and made a change, bringing on Aidan Smith for Wallace. The former Queen of the South striker immediately made his way up in to the Accies penalty area, where with his first touch of the ball, forced Ryan Sinnamon’s near post corner kick over the line to take a surprise lead.

Muir and Smith had further chances to increase Annan’s lead after being played on inside the Hamilton box, two good blocks being all there was between them and another goal. McMann answered with a great cross toward the back post, Gordon headed back across goal where Miller almost equalised when his header rattled off the cross bar.
