Dutch defender Kenny Van der Weg spoke with the media and the website’s Martin McConnell and Mark Gillespie after last Saturday’s game at Fir Park…
Despite the disappointing result, do you still see it in terms of a success?
“We needed to stay up in the league. The performance today wasn’t a good one to have with us going away on our holidays now, it just wasn’t good enough.”
The manager said that he’ll have a lot to do over the summer. Would you agree with that?
“Yes, of course. I think that the way we played today was terrible. We need to win our battles and put on a better performance than todays and like we did last week.”
When the players left the field, there were a few that looked really disappointed?
“Yes, you lose and you’re always disappointed. Of course, we played to win like we do every game and especially as it was a derby game. I don’t know what happened today, but it certainly wasn’t good enough.”
Were you disappointed that Ross County were relegated today, but relieved that Accies stayed up?
“Yes, I have always said that I look at my own result first and now I know that we are staying up. It’s always hard to see your old team mates and people that you’ve worked with in that situation, so that is sad, but I know that we’re staying up and that is the most important thing now.”
Does it prove that you made the right decision at the time?
“I don’t know that you can ever know if you have made a right decision. At the time, everything changed so quickly and now I find myself at Hamilton, I’m happy and will work hard for this team.”
Did you ask to leave the club (Ross County), or did they decide?
“I wouldn’t want to say those things. It is an old story now and I only want to speak about Hamilton.”
Is playing better football next season something you’d like to do as a team? Moving forward now after being in the league for quite a time must be on the agenda?
“Yes, that is what I would like and I think everyone else in the side too. We’d like to play and we have good players to do that, but havent been doing it nearly enough of late. I felt that we lost too easy today. If you stay up or not, it doesn’t matter, you should want to show everything that you can do over the course of ninety minutes and want to win. It didn’t look like that for us today.”
Did it make it harder knowing that Motherwell weren’t at full strength?
“That’s hard to say. Everyone in both squads are good enough players, so it is hard to say.”
Will this result stay with you over the summer?
“It is always good to go home and feel good. I’m disappointed with today’s result and with the way that we performed. Yes, it’s always better to go on holiday with a win under your belt.”
Do you still have another year to go on your contract?
“No. I’m finished now and will have to talk about a new deal.”
Would you like to stay presumably?
“Yes I would.”
Any signs from the club after any talks with them?
“Yes, I spoke yesterday with the gaffer but we need to talk again on Monday then take it from there.”
