Post Celtic comments with Mikey Devlin

Web reporter Mark Gillespie caught up with skipper Michael Devlin after Saturday’s match at Celtic…

Mikey Devlin Interview

Accies Captain Mikey Devlin took time to answer a few questions after the 2-0 defeat at Celtic Park.

Accies played well for first half. It took a moment of individual brilliance from Dembele to break you down?

MIKEY DEVLIN: “When you’re playing against the best team in the league that can happen. I thought for 44 minutes we did everything the manager wanted down to a tee. We were disciplined, stuck to our task, we pressed them well and showed quality on the ball. We were well in the game and it was disappointing to lose a goal right on the stroke of half time.”

Celtic still had to work for their win. Your thoughts on the 2nd half penalty?

MD: It was probably the right decision. Unfortunately these things will happen against skilled opponents who move the ball quickly about the box. Grant Gillespie just mistimed his challenge. Again it was a bad time to lose a goal, so early in the second half. We hoped to keep it 1-0 for as long as possible and then maybe open up towards the end of the game. But as we’ve said in the dressing room, we have plenty of positives from today to take into the Aberdeen game.

It’s quite a run of fixtures we’re into now. How is the squad gearing up for it?

MD: “We’re a really positive group and really looking forward to the games coming up, but we’re getting to the stage of the season where we need to start winning. After the Inverness result we’re now at the bottom but we see winnable games coming up. We’ll always have a chance if we acquit ourselves as well as we did today.

And players getting back to fitness and coming back into the squad will be a real bonus with these fixtures?

MD: Yes, as you saw today with Greg Docherty, it was a real bonus to have him back. Ali Crawford’s not far away either, so we’re coming together again and getting competition for places. That only spurs players on to make sure they stay in the team, and hopefully drives us on to produce good performances.

All thoughts now turn to the Aberdeen game on Tuesday?

MD: We’re just going into it with the same approach and mentality as today. We need to start winning games. We’ve already done it this season against Aberdeen when we won 1-0, and we’ll take confidence from that. We’ll rest tomorrow and then train and get ready to go on Tuesday, and try and take three points.
