Hamilton again failed to hold onto a lead as Motherwell came back from a man down to snatch a derby point with virtually the last strike of the ball in added on time.

Carl McHugh’s cross was headed in by Louis Moult three minutes into stoppage time to deny a hard-working Accies side all three points.

Motherwell created the first chance of the game  in four minutes when Moult’s cross from the right was headed by Scott McDonald in the middle, but Gary Woods got a hand up to deflect it over the bar at point blank range.

Lee Lucas could have put Motherwell ahead with a deft header in 25 minutes, but for Michael Devlin clearing it off the line.

A major turning point came two minutes later, however, when Lucas went flying into a tackle on Massimo Donati that referee Euan Anderson deemed worthy of a  red card.

Hamilton tried to take advantage of that early on, but Ali Crawford’s curling free kick was brilliantly punched past the right post by Craig Samson.

Motherwell had another chance just before the interval when defender Georgios Sarris inexplicably chested the ball down to McDonald and he squared for Moult, but the shot was blocked.

Four minutes into the second half Crawford’s inswinging corner from the left had to be tipped over by Samson.

Motherwell nearly took the lead in 52 minutes when McDonald’s corner on the right was headed by Stephen McManus, but Devlin did well to clear it off the line.

Accies had the ball in the net through Crawford in 53 minutes, but fell foul of an offside flag.

However there was no mistaking it  seconds later when Crawford’s cross was met with a diving header by Alex D’Acol that flew past Samson and into the net for the striker’s sixth goal of the season.

Motherwell passed up a glorious chance to level in 70 minutes when McDonald found space on the edge of the box and slipped the ball to right right to Moult, but his shot was brilliantly touched past the far post by Woods.

Hamilton could have doubled their lead in 82 minutes when Gramoz Kurtaj tore down the right and crossed to Crawford. He controlled and slipped a shot past Samson, but McManus hacked it clear over the line.

And in 85 minutes Kurtaj picked out Louis Longridge, whose shot was going straight into the top left corner but for McManus heading it away for a corner.

However, McHugh’s determination to chase a loose ball paid off when his cross was headed in by unmarked Moult to take a point back to North Lanarkshire.
