Following a recent query from Glasgow based Accies fan Duncan MacDonald, we set out to ascertain who was our youngest player to appear in the Premiership in the recent seasons (Not who was the youngest to play for Accies, merely who had the honour of being our youngest in the top division).
We thought it would be close between Ronan Hughes and James McCarthy, with the current Academy player winning by a few months.
James McCarthy was 15 when he made his first team debut in 2006, but his first appearance in the Premiership came on 11th August 2008 in our 3-1 win v Dundee Utd when he was 17 years 273 days. Ronan Hughes made his debut against Inverness CT here in May and he was 17 years 138 days when he played v ICT on 1st May 2016.
Well done Ronan. Head of Youth George Cairns commented, “Interesting to read this, but again Ronan has worked very hard and played at every age level for us from under 10s right through to first team. I look forward to his continued progression.”
And for an older generation of Accies fans Paul McDonald was 18 years 167 days when he made his top flight debut v Hibernian on 4th October 1986.
