u20s Defeat Partick Thistle to go back top of league

Our u20s defeated Partick Thistle 3-2 at NDP on Tuesday evening (26th January) in an SPFL Development League match. Without being the greatest of games, it had five goals and a controversial closing period which saw two Partick players red carded after we had netted the winner. The result sent us back top of the league, three points clear of Celtic, who have five games in hand.

We opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Steven Boyd burst through on a probing forward run and was brought down 28 yards out. Jesus Garcia Tena curled the resultant free kick into the top corner. Thistle equalised five minutes later when David Wilson’s low angled drive hit one of our defenders on the goalline on its way in. Boyd was replaced by Tierney just before half time after sustaining an ankle injury, and in the time added on we netted to make it 2-1. Cunningham’s shot was pushed out for a corner and from Redmond’s place kick, Jesus Garcia Tena netted his second goal of the game in 45+1′ netting at the back post.

Carlton Morris had a chance for us early in second half but Thistle levelled again in the 58th minute when Kevin Nisbet scored, 2-2. Cunningham had a chance and Tierney too before the closing stages were controversial. Under pressure from Tierney a Thistle defender stumbled and sclaffed the ball inside the area and the ‘keeper picked it up. The referee awarded an indirect free kick to us eight yards out, and with the entire Thistle XI lined up on the goalline between the posts, as per LOTG, Tierney tapped to Ross Cunningham who fired high into the net to make it 3-2. The visiting keeper Scully was then red carded for offensive / insulting / abusive remarks to the referee, then in 90+3′ PT went down to nine men when Michael McMullin picked up a second yellow, and red. It was 90+6’ before the referee called full time. Post match injuries included a cut and black eye for Redmond and ankle injury for Boyd.

Accies – Martin, Reilly, McMann (c), Garcia Tena (C Granger 72), Want, Hughes, Cunningham, Redmond, Morris (Kelly 68 ), Boyd (Tierney 43), Mandiangu. Subs unused Marshall, Simpson, Quitongo, Smith. Referee David Dickinson. Att: 181
