Lewis Smith Makes Scotland u21 Debut

Academy graduate Lewis Smith marks his debut for Scotland u21s with a win against San Marino.

The 19 year old, who has been an Accies fan since he was able to kick a ball, came off the bench in the 63rd minute as Scotland started their Euro 2021 qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory.

Speaking to the clubs website, Smith said: “It was a real honour to come on, we were 2-0 up and thought we could’ve scored more goals. When I came on I was told to get on the ball and run at defenders, I thought I did that but we were unfortunate not to score any more.

“To play at this level for your country is a great feeling, the u21s is a stepping stone into the Scotland national team, Eamonn Brophy being a recent example of that.

“George Cairns has been great in encouraging me to prepare for opportunities like this, he’s always got lots of confidence in us all at Hamilton and the manager is the same.

Smith wasn’t the only academy graduate to represent his country tonight with Lewis Ferguson also playing. Speaking on Ferguson, Lewis added: “Fergie’s been great since we’ve been away, I know him well having played with him before so it was good to be in the same team again.

Scott Gemmill’s side now travel to Sibenik in Croatia for what’s sure to be a tougher match for the young Scots.
