Hamilton Academical v Queen of the South
cinch League 1
Saturday 30th March 2024
3pm at New Douglas Park

Hamilton 0 Queen of the South 0

On Easter Saturday we took on Queen of the South aiming to add another clean sheet to our tally. Boss John Rankin, made one change to the starting XI from last weekend’s win over Cove Rangers, with Kilday replacing injured Owens.

We were the better team in the first half and had a copious number of opportunities to open the scoring but we weren’t clinical enough in front of goal and this would see us go level into the break.

Lewis Smith thought he had opened the scoring on his 150th Accies career appearance in the 13th minute, when Tumilty played the ball through to him, but his low shot was beaten away by Stone.

In the 23rd minute, O’Hara thought he had broken the deadlock when Tumility’s cross found him at the back post and he tapped it in, but the assistant referee flagged for offside.

We had another few great chances to pull ahead before half time but were unable to capitalise on them. However, arguably one of the best chances came in the 45th minute when O’Hara took the ball wide and had to watch as it bounced agonisingly just wide of the bottom corner.

We went into the break all square despite having the best chances. The second half became a bit scrappy with neither team able to gain control. Queen of the South began to probe for the final ten minutes but their efforts would lead to nothing.

In the 79th minute, Queen of the South gained a central freekick just outside the 18-yard box, McKechnie stepped up to take it, but his shot was a relatively easy save for Lyness down to his left.

In the 83rd minute, substitute Hastie thought he had opened the scoring but his shot skelped back off the bar.

Just one minute later, Jamie Barjonas saw red after a second booking inside two minutes was given to him for a foul in the middle of the park.

Queen of the South had the final chance of the afternoon in the 90+1 minute when Reilly played in Cochrane, but his shot was straight at Lyness.

It finished all square at the NDP. Now we must focus on next weekend when we take on Annan Athletic as we aim to maintain our unbeaten run.

Post-match John Rankin gave his take on a disappointing afternoon:

“First half I thought we played some really good football. We had the ball in the back of the net but Kevin is offside, no complaints about that and Dean has not got anything to do.

“I feel we are in positions where we have either got to capitalise or make better decisions in the final third, especially in the first half. In second half I don’t think the game got going at all, it was stop start as we had injuries and they had injuries.

“At nil- nil we still have a chance when Jake hits the bar which he is unfortunate with, then with Henderson he’s through on goal and he is actually on side so that is an opportunity that we should have had.”

Rankin also discussed the recent injury issues within the squad: “Ahkeem is struggling, Lee has a knock, Jackson had to come off with a knock, Ben is struggling through a muscle injury, so we had to make three stoppages in the game and had no more subs to influence it.

“Lee continued to get through the game and that’s the kind of mentality that we are going to need between now and the end of the season, people soldiering on and trying to get through so that we can get what we are looking to achieve.”
