Oban Winners Again

On Saturday (8th July) our young squad went up to the Oban Saints Tournament to defend the D&K Lafferty Cup we won last year.

The club has been sending a team every year since 2003 with a long period of no success, but we have now won three times in the last four years.

Always a great day out, the tournament was once again expertly organised by Davy Buchanan, to whom we send our thanks to him and his committee.

Under George Cairns and Matt Boyle our young squad was –

Alex Marshall, Jamie Boyd, Rico Quitongo, Adam Douglas, Danny O’Halloran, Lewis Ferguson, Steffen Connelly, Lewis Smith, Marc Kelly (c), Liam Scullion, Conor Scullion, Taylor Wilson, plus six trialists.

Game 1, at 11am, saw us defeat Dundee Utd’s u20s / XI by 2-0, with a header from Lewis Ferguson (33′) and a great run and shor from Lewis Smith (36′). Marc Kelly skippered.

Game 2, immediately after at 12noon, saw us beat South Lochaber Thistle (from Kinlochleven and Ballachulish) who were very late entrants after Berwick’s late withdrawal. SLT were a top side in the West of Scotland Amateur League, winning their last ever cup final just three weeks ago, but have now joined the Greater Glasgow League. Unfortunately for them, this was their first day back! We won 5-0, Lewis Smith (2′ capitalising on a defensive slip), Trialist B 6′, Smith again (13′ a great finish), Trialist C 15′, Trialist B 37′. Lewis Smith skippered this match.

Game 3 was at 2pm against hosts Oban Saints, with both teams on 6 points so this became the tournament’s first crucial match. After a cagey start skipper Marc Kelly opened the scoring, off his back heel in 10′, Trialist D doubled our lead in 17′, Marc netted a penalty on 20′ for 3-0 and Lewis Smith made it 4-0 in 31′.

Our goal difference would have been enough to win it thereafter, a point v Alloa in the final game would make sure, but we made it four wins with four clean sheets with a 2-0 win in the last game. Trialist B with a penalty in 4′ and Trialist C in 9′ and that was that! Lewis Smith skippered the first half and Marc Kelly the second.

Lewis Ferguson was named player of the tournament (as voted by the referees) and Lewis Smith was joint top scorer.

Thanks to all who organised and to all who travelled to support the team.
