u20s Accies 0-0 Celtic

Thursday night (4th May) saw the final game in this season’s SPFL Development League, and what a vital game it was. we had to win to win the title on goal difference from Ross County. Any other result gave the title to the Dingwall side, whom we defeated on Monday night.

A big crowd turned up at The SuperSeal, including many well kent faces, some of whom this writer hasn’t seen at the ground for several years.

Despite Accies clearly having the better of the play and the chances throughout, and a more than decent shout for a penalty in the closing stages, the game had quickly settled into a stalemate with two decent sides cancelling each other out. Had Celtic won they would have finished runners-up, but they seemed to have settled early on for a draw. Steven Boyd, Ryan Tierney and Ross Cunningham all created chances themselves, while stalwart defending at the back from Quitongo, Breslin, Gogic and Want ensured there was no way forward for Celtic. Ferguson again did well in the centre field, with Hughes always looking good. At the back Darren Jamieson, of great support to the u20s squad this season, kept a clean sheet, while special mention for David Templeton – after his much publicised injury woes in recent seasons, that was his first 90 minutes in three years last night, a personal achievement for him.

0-0 it finished at a sunny NDP, a bit of an anti-climax, but perhaps the effects of two games in three days for both sides, as well as a wee bit of pressure at the end of a long season.

So our congratulations to Ross County, who won 2-1 at us on the opening day of the season, who win the title for the first time; we finish runners-up for the second successive season. Last year we were 2nd on 62 points, 26 points behind winners Celtic. This year we are again runners-up, a point ahead of the Glasgow side.

The u20s squad thank all those who have supported them at home and around the country this season. As disappointed as they are, they look forward to the new season.
