Mihai Popescu joins on loan

Hamilton Academical are delighted to announce the signing of central defender Mihai Popescu on a season-long loan.

The Romanian joins the club from Heart of Midlothian, where he made 24 appearances in their Championship-winning squad last season.

28-year-old ‘Pops’ first travelled to Scottish shores in January 2019, on loan at Oran Kearney’s St Mirren.

After impressing for the Buddies – keeping them in the Premiership via the play-offs – he returned to Dinamo Bucuresti, before signing for Hearts permanently in September 2020.

However, he is ineligible for this evening’s clash against the Hearts ‘B’ side in the SPFL Trust Trophy after playing in the last round.

‘Pops’ is head coach Stuart Taylor’s second signing, and the gaffer said: “Mihai is another example of the pedigree of player we want to sign at this football club.

“He has valuable experience in a Championship-winning side, and will provide great insight to the younger players in our dressing room.”

Speaking to the club’s media, Mihai said: “I am delighted to be at an ambitious club like Hamilton.

“I know the club from my time in Scotland, and was really impressed when I spoke to the head coach.

“I am looking forward to playing first-team football again.”
