Lewis Smith ready to make up for lost time

Creative midfielder Lewis Smith has insisted he is looking to make up for lost time in the games that remain this season.

The Scotland U21 international has spent the vast majority of the season sidelined through injury and overcoming this challenge has added to his desire to make a difference in the final games of the season.

Speaking ahead of our match with St Mirren today, Smith said: “I haven’t been able to do much this season so I am looking to contribute to the team in any way I can in the games that are left. I have been sitting on the sidelines watching for most of this season and that is frustrating.

“As a squad, we are a really close-knit group and we all want to do well for each other so when you can’t do anything that is definitely frustrating, so if I can score or get an assist that will make a difference that will be brilliant.”

Smith hopes the games that remain will help him move on from what has been one of the most difficult spells of his career.

He said: “I am buzzing to be back and playing with the boys. This has been the most frustrating period of my career but to be back out on the pitch every day feels fantastic. Now I am back I am looking to help the squad in any way that I can.”

Tomorrow will be the first time the sides have met since St Mirren’s victory against us in the Scottish cup and Smith insists the squad are determined to come away with a positive result.

The 21-year-old said: “I obviously wasn’t involved in that game but I think the scoreline didn’t reflect how the game went. As players, we have pride in ourselves and want to win every game so coming into this game the motivation is there to get the win, not just for ourselves, for the fans as well.”

Smith praised the work of the club’s physio and sports science department for the work which they did in helping him to recover from his injury.

He explained: “I had my initial injury, which I recovered from, then I came back and something similar happened again and that set me back to the beginning. The staff here have taken their time with me, I have been pushing myself really hard in the gym and the physio and sport science guys have been brilliant to get me to where I am today.”

Smith and his Accies teammates are in Premiership action today as they travel to Paisley to face St Mirren. The match kicks off at 3 pm and live stream tickets can be purchased here.
