Ross County 0-2 Hamilton Academical
at Victoria Park, Dingwall
Saturday 19th December 2020, kick off 3pm
A rare away win for us at Dingwall, (our last was exactly six years previously), and a first away win for us since at Livingston in September. It also saw Ross County boss Stuart Kettlewell leave his position after the match.
It was also a first match of the season for us with a limited amount of spectators, courtesy of Dingwall (at the time) being in Tier 1, and a ballot across County’s season ticket holders allowing a maximum of 300 to be admitted.
The game also commenced with a minute’s silence in memory of two former County players who had passed away the previous week.
Goals from Ross Callachan and Scott Martin secured our win. Boss Brian Rice commented afterwards, “We’ve been in the position County are in and it’ll galvanise them, it galvanised us. But my aim now is to catch the team above us.”
Separated by just one point beforehand, both teams knew the stakes. Defeat would leave either side adrift at the bottom.
County began with an attack minded line up and threw everything at us. Michael Gardyne was always a pacy threat but shot wide on each occasion when he advanced into the box.
The pace was hectic, with little composure from either side, but Hamilton opened the scoring in the 21st minute when David Moyo cut inside, held off a defender and knocked the ball across to Ross Callachan, who drove the ball into the bottom left-hand corner. A great opener!
County responded by continuing their efforts on Accies goal. Gardyne, Ross Stewart, Oli Shaw, Jordan Tillson, and Alex Iacovitti all had chances. But Hamilton stood firm.
Hamilton appeared content to let County take the ball wide, confident they could defend the crosses.
But they were nearly caught out when Stewart met Keith Watson’s delivery, only for the striker to head into the ground. Stewart forced another save a minute later as the pressure showed no sign of letting up.
We doubled our lead in the 61st minute. Scott Martin picked up a loose ball outside the box, then burst in at pace on the right side of the penalty area, evaded a couple of tackled and fired home. A good individual goal, and Scott’s second of the season. However, he was fouled off the ball immediately after scoring, and after treatment he had to be replaced.
David Moyo then had a good chance to increase our lead but blasted his shot straight at the ‘keeper.
As they say, score the goals, get the three points, and down the road! And a clean sheet for Ryan Fulton too.
