Wednesday, 25th November 2020, kick off 7pm.
Hamilton Academical 1 Aberdeen 1
We remain bottom after earning ourselves a point from a scrappy game that saw us go a goal behind early on. We are now three points behind the Buddies and a win away from getting back into the mix. Whilst the Dons moved above Hibernian into third, leaving them just three points from Celtic.
Despite a fairly even opening quarter hour, Aberdeen went ahead from a Ryan Hedges strike. The visitors then went from strength to strength, leaving Accies struggling to compete or produce something meaningful like a shot on goal or corner kick.
The roles reversed after the break and Accies competed for everything. Marios Ogkmpoe equalised early which stunned the visibly shaken visitors. This more aggressive Hamilton sidewere in their faces, forcing mistakes which Accies attempted to exploit. A late chance in the dying seconds almost won it but for a fantastic Lewis save.
Accies boss Brian Rice’s thoughts on the new shape of his side “It’s great credit to the players. They’ve all taken on board the work that we’re doing and buying into it. First and foremost, they’re going out onto the pitch and they’re putting the effort and commitment in.
Right through the ninety minutes, ninety three minutes. Tonight I think you saw a team that were never going to be beaten. They were always going to fight all the way until the end and they did that.”
Accies fielded the same side that lost away at Tannadice on Saturday. The visitors made a couple of changes to their line up that faced Rangers, with Curtis Main and Dean Campbell replacing Ryan Edmondson and Shay Logan.
Hamilton started well enough, albeit without threatening anywhere near the Aberdeen penalty area. Then from their first decent spell, the Dons went ahead when a Considine cross was cleared only as far as Kennedy, almost 30 yards out. His ball back into the box reached the feet of Cosgrove before breaking for Hedges to place into the bottom left corner from twelve yards.
Aberdeen gained in confidence and almost built on their lead inside a minute when a Considine ball down the left hand side fell for Main. His first touch took the ball nicely inside for Sam Cosgrove to unleash a 20 yard effort destined for goal number two, until Ryan Fulton pushed the ball onto the post and out for a corner kick.
Accies almost made zero impression on the Dons defence and certainly weren’t able to craft a chance or even a corner kick for that matter. The stand offish performance only allowed for hopeful balls into the box. However, a good defensive effort didn’t allow Aberdeen much in the way of further chances.
Minutes into the second half and Accies were awarded a free kick, thirty five yards out and right of centre after Hoban used Ogkmpoe’s back as leverage. Scott McMann put a good delivery into the Aberdeen penalty area, where an unmarked Ogkmpoe headed back across goal to leave Joe Lewis no chance of laying a glove on the ball.
Aberdeen now looked like a side under pressure. A nice bit of play by Callum Smith on the right allowed Ogkmpoe to make a good run in on goal. A chance for a second looked certain but for Hoban’s late tackle putting the ball out for a corner.
The Dons then had a great chance themselves when awarded a free kick 30 yards from goal. McGinn lofted the ball into the Hamilton box where it was headed clear. Kennedy blasted the ball through bodies back toward goal from the eighteen yard line, Fulton saved, Hedges struck the rebound into the ground before Hodson was able to clear for a corner.
Accies weren’t finished yet. A Lee Hodson free kick from wide was knocked down inside the box and sat up nicely for Stirling to strike before seeing it blocked on the six yard line. A final effort saw Fulton hoist the ball to the edge of the box, Moyo headed on for Winter to win and then roll back for Moyo to force a fantastic save by Lewis.
