Stranraer 2-1 Accies, 11th November

Betfred League Cup, Group Stage

Stranraer 2 Hamilton Academical 1

at Stair Park, Stranraer

on Wednesday, 11th November, 2020, kick off 7.30pm

For the second time in the group stage we went down to an away defeat against a League 2 side.  It was our first visit to the south west club since December 2005, and a goal in each half, either side of Hakeem Odoffin’s header, gave the blues the win, and knocked us out the League Cup with a group game still to play.

From Sunday’s defeat at Ibrox we were without David Moyo (on international duty with Zimbabwe) plus injured Marios Ogkmpoe and Will Collar. Added to the squad were Kyle Munro, Scott Martin and Tunde Owolabi. Nathan Thomas and Aaron Martin made their debuts for us.

Adam Cummins had the first shot of the game for the home side, in under two minutes, but his low drive was held by Fulton. Callachan then tried to set up Callum Smith, then Lewis Smith but the defence cleared. In the 7th minute Aaron Martin headed wide from a corner. Lewis Smith then had a good run and set up Thomas who shot wide. Thomas then had two free kicks, one over the bar one cleared.

Stranraer then started to come into it with Victoria and Orr pushing forward, both having a couple of chances before Easton denied ex Accie Millar, and Fulton then saved well from Orr. McMann for us saw his long range effort held by Fleming.

The home side took the lead in the 34th minute, a few moves in and around the penalty area lead to Orr beating Fulton from inside right.

A Nathan Thomas free kick was saved by Fleming.

At half time we brought on Kyle Munro for Thomas.

In the 49th minute Easton set up Munro, his cross to Callachan lead to a handball, but the appeal was waved away. Munro then saw his powerfully driven free kick punched away by the ‘keeper.

We equalised in the 70th minute when Munro’s corner on the right was headed in by Odoffin for his fourth goal of the season.

Fulton then denied Paton before Stranraer went ahead in the 80th minute, veteran Darryl Duffy heading in at back post after a left wing cross. Justin Johnson then saw his free kick come back off the wall, likewise Mimnaugh’s free kick was cleared.

A bad result in a match played in torrential rain throughout.
