Hamilton keeper Jamie Smith made his senior debut on Saturday as Rossvale opened their campaign in the inaugural West of Scotland League with a 1-1 draw away to Beith.
Smith has been farmed out on loan to Rossvale until January to gain valuable game time.
And the highly-rated 18-year-old impressed on his competitive debut, coming within two
minutes of a clean sheet in Ayrshire.
The Bishopbriggs side looked comfortable in the opening 45 minutes shooting up the notorious Bellsdale Park slope with Smith called upon to deal with a few dangerous crosses. Rossvale wasted a number of good opportunities in the opening half but did take the lead midway through the second period when James Finlay knocked home from close range. They looked to be in command when former Peterhead defender Connor McGlinchey was sent off for Beith with 15 minutes to go.
But Rossvale were pushed deeper as Beith threw everything at them for the draw. Smith pulled off a fantastic one-on-one save to keep his side ahead. But he was eventually beaten in the 88th minute when slack marking allowed Kevin Watt to head home from six yards.
All in all a decent point for Rossvale whose management were impressed with Smith’s performance praising, in particular, his commanding of his box, his communication and the crucial save near the end of the game.
