After surpassing Musselburgh Athletic in the previous round, Hamilton’s Scottish cup journey
continued this afternoon in a highly anticipated tie against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park.
John Rankin made just one change to his Accies XI for today’s match with Ricki Lamie replacing
Jackson Longridge.
As for our hosts, they opted for four changes to the side that beat St Mirren 1-0 last weekend.
KICK-OFF
Hamilton started the match with intent and created the first major opportunity inside two
minutes. A ball that was headed on from the previous corner went narrowly wide of the far post.
St Johnstone began to settle into the game in the following stages, creating chances and
moving the ball well, on the other hand, the Accies low block was working as we looked to pose
a threat on the counter attack.
In the 27th minute the saints recorded their first shot on goal as Taylor Steven tried his luck from
long range, forcing a fantastic save from Dean Lyness to keep the score level.
The remainder of the half saw little in the way of goalmouth action and after a positive first half
performance, we went into the break on level terms.
SECOND HALF
The first big chance of the second period came Accies’ way as McDonald’s cross was met by
McGinty who’s header sailed just wide of the far post. Moments later, Hamilton had another huge chance to take the lead. Shaw latched onto a ball in behind the Saints defence and despite his best efforts Andy Fisher produced a fine save to keep the score level.
St Johnstone then had a chance of their own to take the lead in the 70th minute as the ball fell
to Kirk from close range, however, his effort was blocked heroically on the line by Dyaln
McGowan to deny the hosts the opening goal.
In the dying embers St Johnstone took the lead. Adama Sidibeh’s deflected effort from long
range flew past Lyness and into the Accies net.
Despite a monumental effort on and off the pitch this afternoon, we exit the Scottish Cup.
