Teenage Scots Pop-Punkers Anavrin have recorded a version of Nena’s iconic 80s track 99 Red Balloons and it has been adopted by Hamilton Accies this season.
Singer Iona Sky is a lifelong Accies fan and was keen to offer something to the club as they plot their way back to the Championship this season.
Anavrin are Iona on vocals, Brandyn on guitars and Alasdair on drums. They were delighted to come to the ZLX Stadium last week and meet first team players Jamie Barjonas, Kevin O’Hara, Josh O’Brien and Andy Winter aswell as Club Chairman John Brown and let everyone hear their track.
Iona said: “When Brandyn suggested the track for our band, I instantly knew it might be fun to link up with Accies on this. I had heard mentioned by some fans that it might be a good track to play on matchdays, so we contacted the Club and thankfully they liked it.
“There have been a few versions of the track recorded and we wanted to stay close to our punk roots, but it was important to me to keep the vocals true to the original too. Nena is such an incredible singer so I was trying to get close to her vocal performance on this. Hopefully I did that.”
Accies head coach John Rankin was very impressed with the band’s cover and said: “I really like the track and it is great that one of our young fans has produced this for us, we are keen to do all we can to help them promote the track and hopefully we can see them play live soon!”
The track was recorded and mixed by Linzi at Miller Music and Sound and mastered by Max Richardson. Linzi also features with Scottish rockers The Ronains. Iona explained: “The Ronains been great to our band and it was a real thrill for me to record my vocals at Linzi’s studio, Brandyn has done an amazing job on the track too and it’s our first record with Alasdair on drums, who joined us a few months ago and he is fantastic on it. We sent it to Max for mastering and we are so chuffed with it. We have been busy in the studio and we also played a string of dates in HMV stores this summer which has been really fun.”
The band are playing the React Festival on August 26, Tarbert Music Festival on September 17 and HMV Argyll Street in October.
